Bacon, scrambled eggs, some	1

toast; arranged on a plate that matches	2

your skin. Blocks away you sit at a long wooden	3

table, knees sunk deep into a book;	4

Kinesiology. Across from you, Dave	5

swallows juice and is telling jokes. I	6

consider leaping over this counter,	7

dashing to the diner telephone straight	8

from a romantic comedy. Yet I shall	9

refuse. No one cares about movies	10

like that; about "I love you--ha	11

ha ha," and more canned laughter. No	12

object can hold your voice, can cross	13

time or distances, and make	14

those words real. You will never sink	15

into me, a book you read on your	16

knees. Breakfast is almost	17

over.	18
