My Photo
TaylorC

My sister, looking puzzled, showed me
 1
some photo she’d found in a drawer and said,
 2
I don’t remember this.  I eyed
 3
the photo over, seeing my twelve-year-old
 4
face, puffy cheeks.  But I couldn’t see my
 5
glasses, could not recall that light blue
 6
t-shirt I was wearing in the photo.
 7
The picture’s corners were dingy, yellowed
 8
with time.  Examining it closer,
 9
I saw my green eyes
 10
gone, replaced by deep-sunken blues.
 11
It couldn’t have been me;
 12

Or was it?  My dad
 13

asked why we were looking at his
 14
school photo.  Startled, I saw myself
 15
in him, tracing his forty-year-old life
 16
as mine.  I could think of nothing more
 17
frightening, except for that second when
 18
I thought I’d forgotten being alive.
